How to start a healthy meal plan as a New Year's Resolution

As we approach the end of the year and the festive winter season, almost every single person asks, and gets asked the same question, time and again: what is your New Year’s Resolution? What do you plan on doing better this year? What do you plan on changing? Do you have a bad habit that you want to get rid of?

As we approach the beginning of a new set of 365 days, the most-used and ever so classic resolution that jumps the charts every single time would be: to lose weight and eat healthy. To be healthy means to drop all kinds of processed foods, sugary drinks, fried food, empty calories such as in alcohol and candy, and to work more on consuming wholesome, nutritious foods that have added value to your health, while indulging in light physical activity.

But how many of these people actually stick with their promise to themselves to start eating better? How many of those people get past the first month side by side with their vow? I assure you, not many. Why? Because people tend to set too many goals, which tends to be overwhelming when you’re trying to make a change. The goal here is changing your lifestyle altogether. The way it needs to be done, is by doing the following, in baby steps:

  1. Set achievable goals: aim for a target, reasonable number of kilos to lose per month.
  2. List down all of the bad habits that you believe you have, and work on them one by one, step by step.
  3. Choose one type of physical activity exercise that you enjoy and do it. The key to developing a habit of exercise is to do something you genuinely enjoy. Befriend people who are already in the habit of exercising in order to enjoy it with them.
  4. Improve the quality of the food you choose to eat, the way you cook your food and the types of the groceries you buy.
