As part of a healthy and immunity boosting meal plan, we encourage you to consume at least 5 fruits and vegetables per day. From proper hand hygiene to proper fruits and vegetables hygiene, here are our tips for you on how to wash your fruits and vegetables thoroughly using natural ingredients that most of you already have at home. All you need is white vinegar, bicarbonate (baking soda), salt and water!
Start by washing your hands properly for 20 seconds. If you are cleaning your fruits and vegetables in your sink, make sure to clean the sink prior as well.
- For green leafy vegetables such as lettuce, spinach and rocket leaves: Rinse with cold water and soak for a few minutes in a solution of 3 parts water + 1 part vinegar (or baking soda). Rinse again with drinkable or filtered water. Pat with a tablecloth to dry or use a salad spinner if you have one.
- For berries such as strawberries and blueberries: Refrigerate and wash only before eating so that they don’t become spoiled. Blueberries, raspberries and blackberries can be soaked in cold drinkable or filtered water. For strawberries, you can place them under cold filtered running water, pat them dry with a cloth and remove the stem before consuming.
- For oranges and lemons: Rinse them under running water and scrub with your hands or a brush (if you have one). Rinse again with filtered or drinkable water. Dry with a clean cloth.
- For firm fruits and vegetables such as apples and cucumbers: Wash properly by scrubbing under running water. Soak in a solution of 3 parts water + 1 part vinegar for a few minutes then rinse with filtered or drinkable water. Pat to dry.
