Sugar-Sweetened Beverages: The Not-So-Sweet Truth

At Slim and Lite, not only do we offer healthy meal packages, but we offer a lot of health advice that has no expiration date. In my line of work, I come across countless numbers of patients who are coming in for weight loss advice, but just can’t seem to let go of their drinks, sodas, juices, or iced teas.

During my consultations, when I’m trying to gather information on their diet history and salvage every kind of clue as to how this person’s eating patterns are, I can’t seem but to notice that they rarely mention their “drinking” patterns. I’ve noticed that if I don’t specifically direct the question to what kind of drinks they drink, they almost never mention them.

I believe this is attributed to always thinking that their calories come from what they eat. However, they don’t realize the amount of sugar that is added to their beverages, let alone the number of calories that accompanies them. Just one 12-ounce can of coke contains 9.75 teaspoons of sugar.

Sugar has absolutely no value besides sweetening a beverage and gradually causing weight gain, Diabetes and tooth decay. For that reason, as of January 1st, 2020, the UAE announced 50% Excise Tax on Sugar Sweetened Beverages.
