Artificial Sweeteners

There are more than 2 billion people in the world who struggle with obesity and overweight issues. This is due to us taking in more calories and having an inactive lifestyle. there are studies that show that an estimate of 18% of adults will be obese by 2025. there are many risks related to obesity, such as diabetes, heart issues, blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides...  To combat this uptake in obesity and the related risk factors people have begun to switch to artificial sweeteners to reduce their sugar and caloric intake.

There are different types of artificial sweeteners the most common among them are saccharin, sucralose, aspartame as well as extracts from the leaves of Stevia plants.
Studies have shown the benefits of replacing added sugar products with artificial sweeteners in terms of helping us lose weight.

Artificial sweeteners are digested differently due to different factors such as sweetness intensity and after-taste effects. However, it's important to highlight that even though they do have a small caloric value it's considerably less than consuming sugar.

Another benefit of artificial sweeteners is that they change the way we taste sweetness due to hormonal and biological effects which leads to us enjoying sugars less and subsequently prefering artifically sweetened products.

However, everything has pros and cons, one of the negatives for artificial sweeteners is their impact on the composition and function of our gut microbiota (microorganisms in our digestive system).

We cannot deny the benefits of artificial sweeteners when it comes to reducing added sugar consumption but always remember balance is key. While waiting for further studies to clarify the short- and long-term physiological effects of each type of artificial sweetener we should consume a balanced diet without overindulging in high-sugar foods and beverages nor excessive consumption of artificial sweeteners products.
