Tips to reduce bloating

Abdominal bloating occurs when the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is filled with air or gas. Most people describe bloating as feeling full, tight, or swollen in the abdomen.  There are many causes of bloating:

  1. Eating or drinking fast.
  2. Chewing gum all the time.
  3. Following bad eating habits.
  4. Having some medical conditions such as: IBS, food intolerance, heartburn, eating disorders.
  5. Having some mental health factors such as stress, depression, anxiety.

Abdominal bloating can interfere with your ability to work and participate in social events or activities because it is often accompanied by:

  1. Pain.
  2. Excessive gas (flatulence).
  3. Frequent burping or belching.
  4. Abdominal rumbling or gurgles.

Here are some tips to reduce bloating:

  1. Limit your legumes & gassy food intake such as broccoli, cauliflower, and brussel sprouts, as they have a substance called Raffinose that bacteria need to break down which produces gases and leads to bloating.
  2. Limit lactose (in milk) and fructose (fruit sugar) intake as they are hard to digest and can cause bloating.
  3. Eat slowly because the faster you eat the more air you swallow. This air passes then to the intestines causing more bloating.
  4. Limit your fizzy drinks intake.
  5. Increase you water and exercise level to prevent constipation that is a major reason for being bloated.
  6. Maintain a healthy lifestyle diet and a healthy weight.
  7. In case you have any medical condition that causes bloating, follow with your doctor or dietitian to have the appropriate treatment.
